I have tears in my eyes as I type this. John Nash, one of the heroes of schizophrenia, has died in a car accident. The movie, A Beautiful Mind, was the only movie I have seen that showed that people with schizophrenia can be, and sometimes are, brilliant. More importantly John Nash was recognized with a Nobel Prize, one of the highest honors we have. He was such a great example of someone battling schizophrenia and still managing to be productive, have relationships, and lead a “normal life.”
The movie is only inspired by him, the book goes into more detail. I hope in death, as in life, he will bring more awareness to the truth about schizophrenia. I hope more people will give up the stereotypes and stigma.
Good-bye, John Nash, the world was a better place for having you in it.
